Kooley High is a collective of artists that met as students at North Carolina State University. Their work caught the attention of indie label Fat Beats, who signed them to a distribution deal to re-release their 2010 album, Eastern Standard Time, to a national audience. This is a graceful track that combines melodic guitars, jazz horns and groove-heavy bass and drums. The beat is the “star” here, and the emcees wisely flow with it instead of trying to push and make themselves stand out. Nonetheless, the lyrics are straight and have value if you focus on them.
