“You always wrestle with depression because the events and experiences are still there…recognize that happiness and love exist as well.”

Despite the mixed reviews, Lupe Fiasco’s Lasers is pacing to debut #1 next week on Billboard. It has to feel bittersweet for Lupe, who’s readily admitted the album’s process and final sound is more a product of label Atlantic’s meddling than his orginal intentions. In this in-depth interview with Tavis Smiley, the Chicago lyricist talks about how the near 4 year delay with Lasers helped drive him to depression and potential suicide. In addition, he clarifies his issues with Obama/voting, and the importance of a figure like Jay-Z in Hip-Hop.

  1. I’m a latino who likes rap music more than anything in this world. My english is not perfect, but I’ll try to do my best. I can’t understand why not body in USA didn’t notice the fact that artist like Lupe, Krs, Nas,Talib, are only slaves of the corporations and a disgrace for the afroamerican people, who had the urgency to know real leaders, real writters and real artist. Is crazy hear this puppets talk about economics problems, ignorance and modern slavery when at the same time they are supporting one of the biggest problems, USA’s foreign politics and corporations. It looks like they’ve got lost in time, they mentality kept in the 60’s, and they still think that Obama is a great president, is really crazy.
this make me sad, see all this legends in the same level of lil’ Wayne or Souljah boy, why people dont wake up???

I thing since the day hip-hop became corporations biggest tool, that’s was the day when hip-hop died.

I dont want to disrespect nobody, I just want to give my opinion and my point of view.

Thanks to those who understand what I’m trying to say. Also is sad to see all of the people saying “go get your money” “is all about the money”….it’s make me clear that the wonderful world of Disney did a good brain washing job.

    1. to hear an objective opinion on that topic is refreshing yes, but blasting nas, kweli and krs and calling them a disgrace is a disgrace in it’s self. the entire idea behind their music has been juxtaposed to the image that the new rap game has put on the “afroamerican” people.

the slaves of the corporation (Jay-z Kanye gucci etc etc) are keeping black america in the mind frame that the only way to make it is to sell dope or sell your soul and slave for the same corporations that want to see them exterminated.

in the end, it IS all about the money, and lupe deserved better than to wait 4 years for lasers to drop. if he would have stuck with the plan to release LUPend, then i would still be a fan

  2. It’s crazy how more than 50% of people young kids and some adults idolize have done something so simple as selling there soul just to make quick bucks or just to get somewhere. But like someone wise once told me. You can’t take that money, cars, clothes or anything of that matter with you when you die. You so worried about going broke you forgot about the little people that look up to you and say they want to be you one day and they call their selves a motivation… No thank you! I would rather die with my soul intact and my head screwed on tight. Because if parent’s don’t step in now.. Who’s going to be there next influence? Think about it.
