Remember in school when there was at least a kid or two that could kick-start a great beatboxing session? If you’re under the age of 25, you’re likely drawing a blank right now. But anyone older can recall those happenings. By the time I got to middle school, and definitely by high school, you’d be lucky to find a few peers in the entire school that could beatbox.
Fast forward to today, and skilled beatbox practitioners, at least in the States, have gone the way of the Jedi after Order 66. But overseas those building blocks of Hip-Hop culture like graffiti and beatboxing are not just remembered fondly, but studied and mastered. A perfect example is French beatboxer Eklips, who earlier this week uploaded a phenomenal four-minute clip that runs through classic records from Hip-Hop’s 30 odd year history.
Eklips goes through the work of SugarHill Gang, Slick Rick, Public Enemy, Beastie Boys, KRS-One, Notorious B.I.G., Dr. Dre, Eminem, Jay-Z, Kanye West, Gang Starr, Wu-Tang Clan and quite a few others. According to Trace Urban, whom the below video was done for, Eklips did this all in one take!
As much as we all bemoan some of the things going on in Hip-Hop, the culture will never be dead as long as there are people like Eklips around. Enjoy.

The US record industry would have us belive hip-hop is dead. Rap music is f’d up right now, but hip-hop is alive and well.
Dope! Props to Eklips!
Thanks a lot for this. This dude is awesome!
