They did it to themselves.
The brutal murder of Native activist Annie K was solved long ago solved by her community. And in the season finale of True Detective: Night Country, a group of Native women took center stage to detail their view of restorative justice against the TSALAL scientists.
It’s revealed the scientists met their fate by vengeful Native women who discovered proof of Annie K’s murder beneath the TSALAL facility. Knowing Native women aren’t valued and Annie’s investigation would sputter against Silver Sky mine’s resources, the women decided to “write their own story” of vigilante justice as revealed to Liz (Jodie Foster) and Evangeline (Kali Reis).
Evangeline Navarro’s journey to discovering her Native identity was a key in unveiling Annie K’s death. With her sister Julia’s suicide eliminating her final close relative, Evangeline encountered her deceased mother’s spirit and obtained her true Native name. With that moniker, Evangeline was finally able to gain access to the Native women who confessed their role in the TSALAL scientist killings. After being haunted for years by Annie’s death, Evangeline made the call to absolve the women from further investigation.
