KYOTO, JAPAN — Ganigan Lopez laid claim to his first world title by defeating Yu Kimura for the WBC world light flyweight title.
Lopez, who failed in a world title bid against Pedro Guevara last July, proved to be a predatory challenger in keeping constant pressure while maintaining versatility to outbox Kimura at mid-range.
Kimura, making his first defense since lifting the belt from Guevara in November, never managed to get into an offensive groove and found himself outlanded 3-1 in most exchanges.
Judge Juan Carlos Pelayo scored the fight even (114-114). He was overruled by Cathy Leonard and Gary Ritter, who had it 119-109 and 118-110, respectively.
