LAS VEGAS — WBO, WBA, and IBF light-heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev and Nadjib Mohammedi were on target yesterday for tonight’s HBO title match. Kovalev tipped the scales at 174.5 and Mohammedi at 173.

KOVALEV-MOHAMMEDI PREDICTION: This fight should be competitive in the early rounds due to Mohammedi’s faster hands and awkward angles. The challenger is also a good athlete, which has allowed him to get away with wide punches, having his chin up in the air, and pulling straight back from punches. Kovalev’s jab will be key in keeping Mohammedi off balance and from jumping in with power shots. By the fourth, I expect Mohammedi to be in retreat where he’ll be a sitting duck for Kovalev’s technically sound offense. KOVALEV TKO6

Pascal vs. Gonzalez: The co-feature pits former champion and recent Kovalev victim Jean Pascal against Yuniesky Gonzalez. This is a catchweight bout with Pascal coming in at 178 and Gonzalez 177. Since Kovalev is light on future opponents, expect the winner of this bout to get a title shot.
