LOS ANGELES — The weights are in for HBO’s May 16 double-header featuring Gennady Golovkin vs. Willie Monroe, and the American debut of Roman Gonzalez against Edgar Sosa. Now it’s time to make predictions.

GONZALEZ: 111

SOSA: 112.2

PREDICTION: Hardcore fans have been beating the drums about Chocolatito’s Pound 4 Pound merits and this looks to be a fight to put that on display. Edgar Sosa has been one of the most accomplished fighters at flyweight and light flyweight over the last 5-7 years. But at 35 he’s ancient for this weight class and facing a beast in his absolute prime. Not the mention that it took Sosa two tries to make weight and he looks noticeably drained. I expect this one to become target practice rather quickly. GONZALEZ TKO5

GOLOVKIN: 159

MONROE: 160

PREDICTION: Too bad (for Monroe) this isn’t a body-building contest. Much is being made of this fight being a challenge for Golovkin due to Monroe being a mobile southpaw. Monroe does move and has pop in both his straight left and right hook. However, he’s not nimble enough on his feet to prevent GGG cornering him consistently. Monroe also doesn’t possess an authoritative jab, which will allow Golovkin to push him back to the ropes where he’ll be vulnerable to right hands and body shots.

GGG told me he’s looking for a long fight to improve his conditioning, but I have my doubts he’ll find Saturday night. GOLOVKIN TKO7
