PANAMA CITY, PANAMA — Shannon Briggs made quick work last night of a hapless opponent in Zoltan Petranyi (51-22), but may have found a potential dance partner outside of Wladimir Klitschko in former cruiserweight titlist Guillermo Jones.
Briggs needed just a few solid body shots to drop Petranyi twice and score a first round stoppage. The only other eventful moment of the fight came when Briggs was docked a point for teasing an illegal blow after pushing Petranyi to the canvas.
Jones, who hasn’t fought since winning a bloody, Fight of Year level battle with Denis Lebedev in May 2013 (and later testing positive for a banned substance), is a native of Panama and respectfully confronted Briggs about a fight. Briggs responded that he has a guaranteed, “$10 million dollar” payday looming with Klitschko and will consider Jones afterward.
Briggs is currently on a seven-fight win streak against unranked competition since losing a 2010 bout to Vitali Klitschko.
Wladimir Klitschko will defend his WBA, IBF and WBO titles against Bryant Jennings on April 25 in New York City.
