Mayweather Confirms Pacquiao Superfight: “Boxing fans… will witness greatness on May 2.”

The wait is over. Floyd Mayweather has officially announced the long-awaited superfight with Manny Pacquiao has been inked for May 2 at Las Vegas’ MGM Grand.

Mayweather posted a picture of the signed contract on his “Shots” account and released an official statement that cited his face to face meeting with Pacquiao earlier this month as crucial in cementing the deal.

“I am glad my decision to meet with Manny and discuss making this fight happen helped get the deal done,” said Mayweather. “Giving the fans what they want to see is always my main focus. This will be the biggest event in the history of the sport. Boxing fans and sports fans around the world will witness greatness on May 2. I am the best ever, TBE, and this fight will be another opportunity to showcase my skills and do what I do best, which is win. Manny is going to try to do what 47 before him failed to do, but he won’t be successful. He will be number 48.

“I dedicate this fight to all the fans who willed this fight to happen and, as always, to bring glory to the Philippines,” added Pacquiao on Twitter.

Mayweather will get a 60/40 split of an bout estimated to be worth over $250 million. Each fighter will be able to select their own gloves. Although not confirmed, the broadcast team is expected to feature Jim Lampley, Al Bernstein, Roy Jones, Jim Gray and Max Kellerman.

“May 2 will be a signature moment for the sport of boxing and HBO Sports is thrilled to be a part of this spectacular event,” said HBO Sports President Ken Hershman. “I know the fighters and their teams will be primed to excel and we plan to work closely with everyone involved to deliver the same level of performance from a broadcast perspective.”

The fight will be a joint venture between Top Rank and Mayweather Promotions with pay-per-view support from HBO and Showtime.
