Froch vs. Chavez Jr. In Play for Las Vegas on March 28

IBF super middleweight titlist Carl Froch is close to achieving his wish to fight in Las Vegas, as negotiations are “close” to completion for a March 28 date to face Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

According to The Daily Express, Froch vs. Chavez Jr. would be supported by the return of IBF welterweight titlist Kell Brook against his mandatory Jo Jo Dan.

Chavez had previously turned down options this year to face Gennady Golovkin and Carl Froch due to contract disputes with his promoter Top Rank. Chavez last fought in March, defeating Bryan Vera in a rematch by unanimous decision.

Since losing to Andre Ward in June 2011, Carl Froch has won the IBF title and made four successful defenses, the last being a rematch TKO stoppage over George Groves in May. Froch has not ruled out facing his IBF mandatory, fellow Brit James DeGale. However, the champion has been adamant that he wants a “superfight” in Vegas to close out his career.

Chavez has fought several times on U.S. pay-per.view. The last was as a headliner in 2012, generating 475,000 buys in a losing effort against then middleweight champion Sergio Martinez. Froch has become one of the UK’s top pay-per-view attractions, generating 900,000 buys for his rematch against Groves.

At press time, neither fighter has made an official statement on the negotiations.

From an action standpoint, this a very good fight and one I’d be inclined to make the Vegas trip for. Style-wise, Froch should have an absolute field day landing on Junior and I can’t see any other ending but a brutal stoppage for Froch.
