LONDON, ENGLAND — What was billed as a “Bad Blood” rematch quickly turned into a one-sided thrashing. A southpaw (!!!) Tyson Fury easily controlled and beat down Dereck Chisora to force a 10th round stoppage tonight at the ExCel Arena.
Fury surprised all by adopting to fight most of the bout southpaw, allowing him to pepper Chisora with hard straight lefts and right jabs. Amazingly, Chisora as the smaller man opted to plod forward sans head movement and a counter jab, allowing Fury to render him a human punching bag. Within a few rounds, Chisora’s right eye began to swell from left hooks and uppercuts. By the middle rounds, Fury had already turned the bout into a sparring session.
The crowd was not pleased and loudly booed in the most of the rounds. At one point, referee Marcus McDonnell chastised the fighters for not giving full effort. The problem was more so Chisora’s anemic effort. If any blame can be placed on Fury, it’s for fighting down to Chisora’s pace and not going for the kill, which was possible at least three round before the finish.
With his face swollen and bloody, Chisora’s trainer told him at the end of the 10th that he wanted his man to leave with the dignity of finishing on his feet. “Delboy” agreed without much resistance.
The win gives Fury the vacant BBBofC heavyweight title. More importantly, it moves him into the #1 contender spot for the WBO portion of Wladimir Klitschko’s heavyweight crown.
