Canelo Alvarez has confirmed that an ankle injury will force him to withdraw from a proposed December 6 fight against Joshua Clottey.
In a brief statement released through promoter Golden Boy, Alvarez would only say the injury is “persistent.” Later on Instagram, he specified the injury was to his left ankle.
Last month, Canelo announced a return to HBO with a multi-year, exclusive contract that includes pay-per-view and HBO Championship Boxing telecasts.
The nixed Clottey fight was rumored to set up a May 2015 clash against reigning middleweight champion Miguel Cotto.

First, Cotto decides a few months ago to sit out the rest of 2014 rather than face Andy Lee. Today, Canelo opts to nurse an “ankle injury” instead to making a triumphant HBO return to close out 2014. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out what’s going on. Both fighters know they are eyeing quite possibly the biggest fight of 2015 and don’t want to risk any freak injuries or upsets beforehand.
The fact this is happening in October let’s us know these two are deep in negotiations. Hopefully said negotiations entail putting together a high quality undercard for such a massive fight.
Somewhere, Joshua Clottey is fuming…
