MACAU, CHINA — WBA and WBO super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux improved to 14-0 (9 KOs) earlier today with a controversial first round knockout over Sod Kokietgym.

Rigondeaux quickly established distance with snapping straight left hands. An accidental clash of heads resulted in Kokietgym writhing on the floor and needing several seconds to recover. Kokietgym then touched gloves with Rigondeaux, who immediately after contact fired a quick right hook-left cross combination that crumpled Kokietgym to the canvas. He barely beat the count but was in no shape to continue.

Kokietgym complained that he was fouled, but referee Mark Nelson ruled that action had resumed and the shots were legal.

This fight fulfills Rigondeaux’s contract with Top Rank and makes him an unrestricted free agent.

    1. Appareciareciate it, aDboy! Diaz and Rigondeaux split a few months back. No details were given but apparently it was on amicable terms. Diaz is working with MMA fighters (notably Viktor Belfort) and writing a two-part book series entitled “Train to Win” on boxing and MMA. It is surprising that no other big name fighters have tried to scoop him up.

  1. Not at all…ninja is a fighter thru & thru habing won championships & another style of fighting & an extensive boxing record. He should have known better to re-engage so casually & recklessly. Shame on him not rigo.

    1. Totally agree. Know your opponent and realize everyone isn’t as friendly as Shane Mosley. I remember Maidana almost took Khan’s head off with a hook when Amir tried to touch gloves after a foul. Err on the side of caution and save the glove touching for before and after the fight.

  2. Its not as controversial as Floyd when he KO Ortiz haha but it was abit of a cheap shot, it would of made no difference to the outcome of the fight though…

At the end of the day, as the old saying goes ‘protect yourself at all times’, Rigo is as fast as a bullet though!!!

Maybe the ref should of given Kokietgym more time to recover from the head clash???

    1. Keep in mind Rigo was probably in a hurry to fulfill that Top Rank contract. haha I agree with you on the head butt time. He was still dazed and that 1-2 finished the job. His hands were up too and it’s not like Rigo gave him a “fake glove touch.” A little sneaky? Sure, but perfectly legal.
