Floyd Mayweather has verified that his September 13 bout will be a rematch with Marcos Maidana.
Mayweather made the announcement at the BET Awards during a pre-taped interview.
“September 13, back to business. Marcos Maidana-Floyd Mayweather part two,” said Mayweather in a red carpet interview with Laten Media. “I’m fighting in May and I have a big surprise for y’all. Everybody tune in.”
Utilizing rough-house inside fighting and pressure, Maidana found early success against Mayweather when the exchanges went to the ropes. A mid-biut adjustment and late surge by Mayweather gave him the scoring space needed to post a majority decision win (117-111, 116-112, 114-114). However, controversy remained from the bout due to Mayweather refusing to fight Maidana if he wore custom-made Reyes gloves that were authorized by the Nevada athletic commission. In the post-fight press confernece, Maidana’s trainer Robert Garcia claimed the gloves they used were hand-picked by Mayweather’s team and deliberately made too small for Maidana’s hands.
At press time, the venue nor the press tour information has been announced.
