Framed as a “holiday gift” to boxing fans, Showtime Sports and Golden Boy have announced dramatic additions to their December 7 and 14 boxing cards that have resulted in back to back quadruple-headers main-evented by Zab Judah vs. Paulie Malignaggi and Adrien Broner vs. Marcos Maidana.

The December 7 card, taking place from Brooklyn’s Barclays Center, now features the Judah-Malignaggi headliner supported by Devon Alexander defending his IBF welterweight title against Shawn Porter. Austin Trout will face Erislandy Lara for the vacant WBA junior middleweight title. Rounding out the event is Sakio Bika defending his WBC super-middleweight strap against Anthony Dirrell.

Broner-Maidana on December 14 moves from the MGM Grand to the Alamodome in San Antonio. It is now filled out by Keith Thurman vs. Jesus Soto Karass, Leo Santa Cruz defending the WBC super bantamweight belt against Cesar Seda, and the return of Victor Ortiz vs. Alfonso Gomez. Broner-Maidana will also have a special edition of All-Access. A fifth fight will potentially be broadcast on Showtime Extreme featuring light-heavyweight titlist Beibut Shumenov facing Tamas Kovacs.

The cards will be Showtime’s final major boxing telecasts for 2013.

WOW. If HBO thought they were going to get their “Epic Fall Boxing Season” and the rest of 2013 to themselves, Showtime just gave them a jarring wakeup call. HBO already has a December 7 card featuring Guillermo Rigondeaux vs. Joseph Agbeko, but the Showtime quadruple-header on that date blows that out the water.

It’s also a great move to take the Broner fight off pay-per-view. It’s still too early for The Problem to carry ppv (it took his big brother Floyd 9 years), and getting the fight out of Vegas gives regular fans the opportunity to get tickets. Golden Boy said they want to bring the sport to different cities and this move shows they’re serious about that statement. The addition of All-Access is another nice touch for Broner’s profile.

I have zero complaints about these moves and they cap what has been a dominant 2013 for Showtime.
