MOSCOW, Russia — The weights are in for tomorrow’s heavyweight title match between Wladimir Klitschko and Alexander Povetkin. Klitschko weighed in at 241.6 pounds, his lowest weight since knocking out Ruslan Chagaev in 2009. Povetkin tipped the scales at 225.7, his lowest weight since winning a fifth round knockout over Javier Mora in 2010.
The fight will be for Klitschko’s WBA, WBO and IBF titles.
Prediction: Povetkin loses this one badly. He’s not a strong pressure fighter, doesn’t have a good inside game (where he needs to be to nullify Wlad’s advantages) and worst of all, is a upright fighter with minimal head movement. Sure, that can make for exciting contests, like we saw last year when he won a questionable decision in a war against Marco Huck. Against Wladimir, all these attributes are going to earn Povetkin is a one-sided thrashing. A thrashing, mind you, that his handlers have been running from since 2008. This is long overdue.
Hard long jabs and massive right hands are what we’ll see repeated until Povetkin succumbs. I’ll be suprised if this goes past five rounds.
