Ajose Plans to Make An Example Out of Matthysse

"I've been waiting for the opporutnity to win a world title my entire life..."

Undefeated light welterweight contender Olusegun Ajose will receive his first title shot (and main event slot) when he faces feared slugger Lucas Matthysse this Saturday (September 8) on a special edition of Showtime Championship Boxing.

This bout is a long-time coming for Ajose, who spent the earlier part of this year issuing callouts to the likes of current WBA and WBC champion Danny Garcia and other top 140 pounders. Although a clear underdog, Ajose sees Matthysse, who’s coming off a very entertaining KO of Humberto Soto in June, as a good opponent to showcase why most fighters have ignored him.

I’ve been waiting for the opportunity to win a world title my entire life. No one can understand what I’ve been through being that I’ve been bypassed my shot to fight for a world title for years, with fighters I know I can beat getting their chance before me for no reason at all. The time is now to show the world what I am made of. I’m not going to let this long-awaited opportunity pass me by. Come fight night I will leave everything in the ring and come out victorious.

Ajose-Mayythsse will be for the interim WBC super lightweight title and airs live at 9 p.m. ET from the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.

As you can see from the clip, Ajose is a capable southpaw with speed and elusiveness. He’ll need every bit of it if he hopes to deal with Matthysse, who’ll be in his normal seek and destroy mode. With that said, Matthysse had problems with his last two name southpaws (Zab Judah and Devon Alexander), though he lost by controversial decisions in both. Is Ajose in that class or better? We’ll see in just a few days.
