Garcia’s Trainer Ridicules Amir Khan’s Pakistani Roots

"I have never, ever, ever in my lifetime... that I've been living... 49 years... I have never met a Pakistanian [sic] who could fight."

Danny Garcia’s father/trainer Angel upped the war of words today with July 14 unification opponent Amir Khan by claiming Khan’s ancestral Pakistan homeland doesn’t produce good fighters.

Garcia, who’s already predicted his son will KO Khan, made the controversial comments earlier today during an interview with boxingscene.com

I have never, ever, ever in my lifetime… that I’ve been living… 49 years… I have never met a Pakistanian [sic] who could fight. And I’m being honest with you. I ain’t beating around the bush or trying to sound racist. I’m being honest with you.

The key to beating Khan is going in there and beating the fucking shit out of him. This guy never faced a Puerto Rican in his God damn life. He never faced a Puerto Rican hungry like Danny. I’m going to tell you the truth. No more beating around the bush. I’m tired of all the bullshit that goes on behind [closed doors] in boxing.

Angel Garcia’s been running his mouth ever since the first press conference and he’s now taken the fight somewhere it didn’t need to go. We already had a great storyline of two young champs unifying. Now it’s going to get tied up by this surreal jingoism that Garcia is championing.

Make no msitake, boxing is a sport that emphasizes nationalistic and racial pride. Fans and writers routinely label fighters simply by their background (“hard-hitting Mexican,” “the Puerto Rican stylist” etc.) to imply things about their style. And in doing so, lines can routinely be crossed when dealing with two ethnic groups that have a combative history.

Who can forget Alan Minter boasting that he’d never lose to a black man before getting destroyed by Marvin Hagler? Or Bernard Hopkins declaring to Joe Calzaghe’s face he’d never lose to a white person before dropping a split decision? Angel Garcia may be the next one to eat his words.

You have to wonder how Danny Garcia feels about his Dad’s comments. There’s a conference call scheduled later today, so we’ll see if he’s going to gag his father before next Saturday.
