Ortiz: 146.5 pounds
Lopez: 144.7 pounds
Prediction: Ortiz KO7. Lopez is a tough kid who’ll make for some nice exchanges early on, but I feel he’s outgunned in the size and power departments. Put an emphasis on the word size. Lopez has spent most of his career at 135-140 pounds. Ortiz was huge at 140 and is big even for welter; against Mayweather Ortiz came into the ring essentially a middleweight. It’ll be entertaining for as long as it lasts, but eventually Lopez succumbs.
It is also worthy noting from the staredown footage that Mayweather’s two-piece hasn’t knocked all the head butting tendencies out of Ortiz.
Prediction: Matthysse by majority decision. Now this fight could steal the night. We know when pushed Soto can put on a thrilling fight as witnessed by his Fight of the Year candidate a few years back against Urbano Antillon. Soto is more skilled while Matthysse is the bigger puncher. Just because I feel Matthysse is due a break after the Judah and Alexander close decision losses, I think his heavier shots will be enough to get a tight decision in his favor.
