Remembering the Greats: Teofilo Stevenson (1952-2012) [VIDEO]

Although tempted to turned professional by Don King and Bob Arum for possible big money showdowns with Muhammad Ali, Stevenson remained committed to Cuba's regime, leaving his rich legacy a question mark as to how he may have fared in the 70s golden era of heavyweights.

The boxing world has lost arguably its greatest Olympic and amateur champion in Cuba’s Teofilo Stevenson. Standing 6’3 with a razor-sharp right hand, Stevenson was only one of three boxers in history to win Olympic gold medals three times (1972, 1976, 1980). Although tempted to turned professional by Don King and Bob Arum for possible big money showdowns with Muhammad Ali, Stevenson remained committed to Cuba’s regime, leaving his rich legacy a question mark as to how he may have fared in the 70s golden era of heavyweights.

With Cuba sitting out the 1984 Olympic games, Stevenson would win another gold medal at the 1986 World Amatuer games before retiring after the 1988 Olympics, which Cuba also declined to participate in. His final record stands at 302-22.

Stevenson passed away of heart failure and is survived by two children. He was 60 years old.
