LAS VEGAS — Lightweight contender Michael Katsidis suffered a surprise upset last night on ESPN’s Friday Night Fights, losing a spirited ten round majority decision to Albert Mensah.
Katsidis displayed his trademark high punch volume for the entire contest. The Australian fighter exceeded 100 punches thrown in all but two rounds (140 in the first). Mensah relied on accuracy and power. Katisidis was jarred regularly with left uppercuts and straight rights.
The difference in punch damage became pronounced in the final rounds. Mensah deftly countered Katsidis’ offense, which now was reduced to arm punches. Mensah staggered Katsidis late with lefts hooks in the ninth and took the final round by continuing to rely on that punch.
Final scorecards for the bout read 95-95, 96-94 and 98-92 for Mensah, who improves to 25-3-1, with 10 KOs. Katsidis falls to 28-6 (23 KOs)
