Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. Predicts Son Will Defeat Sergio Martinez in 2012

"The offer has been made," Tweeted Chavez Sr. "The purse is 60/40 in favor of Chavez. People will always talk, but the words are gone like the wind. I bet my whole career, my sweat and triumphs that my son will beat your smelly ass."

Legend Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. took to Twitter yesterday to berate Sergio Martinez and boldly declare his son will defeat the middleweight champion this year.

Chavez Sr. claimed a contract offer is already on the table for his son and current WBC middleweight titlist Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. to face Martinez in the fall.

“The offer has been made,” Tweeted Chavez Sr. “The purse is 60/40 in favor of Chavez. People will always talk, but the words are gone like the wind. I bet my whole career, my sweat and triumphs that my son will beat your smelly ass.”

“Look, as a boxer, I respect you, but stop talking shit and I guarantee that in September the fight will be made in Las Vegas. Jr [sic] already has a date in June, but after that I guarantee that the next fight will be with you. My word as a champion. Tell your promoter to sit down with Fernando Beltran so you can come to agreement. It’s done.”

Martinez  responded on Twitter by stating Chavez Sr.’s claims were “without credibility” and believed there to be little chance of the fight happening.

In my mind I have the fight with Macklin, but I laugh at what the Chavez [family] are saying,” said Martinez. “I think they’re mad that they’re not fooling us, the fans, and those who know boxing.”

Martinez is widely viewed as the legitimate middleweight champion of the world despite being stripped of the WBC strap in last February after he declined to face mandatory challenger Sebastian Zbik. Chavez Jr. would pick up the belt in June 2011 after defeating Zbik by a unanimous decision. Martinez is currently listed as Chavez Jr.’s mandatory challenger and per WBC president Jose Sulaiman will be stripped if he doesn’t move forward with the defense.

Last week, Fernando Beltran on behalf of Chavez Jr’s camp  made a intial  30/70 purse split offer to Martinez. Martinez’s camp scoffed at the split as a blatant attempt to avoid the fight.

At press time, Chavez Jr.’s camp is looking at Martin Murray for a June title defense.

Junior can be thankful that his father is not his matchmaker because if so that belt would be coming off him in September. Even if, and it’s a very big if, the WBC moves forward with stripping Junior, that wouldn’t be enough for Bob Arum to let one of his budding cash cows get dismantled by a clearly better fighter. What will probably happen is Chavez Jr. working out a voluntary defense to justify the Murray fight in June and then being able to wiggle out of the Martinez fight by stating the real champ was being unreasonable at the negotiation table. Should the fight come off, credit would be due to Chavez for stepping up and finally facing the best fighter in his division. Then again, isn’t that what a champion is supposed to do???
