Fernando Montiel (40-3-2, 36 KOs) shook off some early timing issues to score a third round knockout over Alvaro Perez (21-4-1, 12 KOs). Montiel was aggressive in pursuing Perez with power shots in round one. the southpaw Perez came back in the second by countering Montiel’s wide swings with left hooks. During a third round, inside exchange of punches, Montiel caught Perez with a left hook that crumpled him to the canvas. Perez appeared to be lucid but did not beat the count. The fight is Montiel’s second consecutive victory at super bantamweight after a February TKO loss to Nonito Donaire at 118 pounds.

On the replay, that KO looked suspect. It didn’t even look like Montiel landed solid. I’m not the one who took the punch so I’ll give Perez the benefit of the doubt. Montiel didn’t look bad, but I really wish he’d start keeping his hands up. As Donaire showed, Montiel doesn’t have the speed to keep getting away with that against elite fighters.
