Alfredo Angulo Signs With Golden Boy For Comeback

"I always want to give the fans a great show and I work hard to get to my goal of retiring as a world champion," explained Angulo, who last fought in July 2010. "I believe Golden Boy Promotions is the right company to further my career and achieve my goals in boxing."

Alfredo “El Perro” Angulo (19-1, 16 KOs) has renewed his goal of winning a world championship by leaving Gary Shaw Promotions for Golden Boy.

Angulo has been inactive since last summer when he was deported to Mexico for competing in the U.S. with an invalid visa. Before that, HBO had invested heavily in Angulo, showing the majority of his junior middleweight bouts. The new signing was made possible after Gary Shaw agreed to an undisclosed settlement. While Angulo did not level any criticism at Shaw, he did emphasize that his signing was done with the sole intention of becoming a world champion.

“I always want to give the fans a great show and I work hard to get to my goal of retiring as a world champion,” explained Angulo, who last fought in July 2010.  “I believe Golden Boy Promotions is the right company to further my career and achieve my goals in boxing. I can’t wait to become Golden Boy’s next world champion.”

Since suffering his first loss to Kermit Cintron in 2009, Angulo has won his last four fights by knockout. Included amongst his victims were former contenders Joel Julio and Joachim Alcine. With the debilitating power and not yet 30 years old, Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer believes Angulo has the potential to become a Mexican superstar.

“There are a handful of fighters who always deliver excitement whenever they’re in the ring and Alfredo Angulo is certainly one of those select few,” Schaefer said.  “Alfredo has already accomplished a lot in this sport, but at 29, there’s much left for him to accomplish and we’re going to be with him every step of the way as he moves from being a star to being a superstar.”

At press time, Angulo nor Golden Boy has disclosed the current status of the fighter’s visa issue.
