Former street and MMA fighter Kimbo Slice will start his boxing career against another novice fighter in Springfield, Missouri’s James Wade (0-1) on August 13 in Miami, Oklahoma.
The 39-year-old Wade’s only fight to date was his January debut at cruiserweight against another debuting fighter in Carlos Torres. Wade lost the fight via a third round KO.
With his MMA experiment an overall failure after immense early buzz through the now defunct Elite XC and later the UFC, boxing represents the 37-year-old Slice’s last opportunity to make a name for himself in a professional combat sport. In addition, his advisor Jared Shaw says every opponent, no matter unheralded, will be at their very best to make a name for themselves off Slice.
“Just like in MMA, Kimbo Slice is walking around with bull’s-eye on his back,” Shaw explained. “His opponents know they can make themselves known to the world if they can take him out. To Kimbo it’s a pro boxing debut. To James Wade, this is a world championship fight.”
Run by Gary Shaw Promotions, Slice vs. Wade will be held at the Buffalo Run Casino with tickets priced between $38-$68 through www.buffalorun.com.
