FRISCO, TEXAS — With trainer Ann Wolfe back in his corner, James Kirkland kicked off his second comeback with a first round TKO over Dennis Sharpe last night (June 24) at Dr. Pepper Arena.
Kirkland rushed Sharpe immediately and made it an in-fight battle. Sharpe attempted to trade hooks with the stronger Kirkland and was forced to take a knee after absorbing a left uppercut and hook at the 1:40 mark.
Kirkland charged Sharpe with a flurry hooks, but settled back down after being caught with a counter right hook. Kirkland then started mixing up his power shots to the body. He caught Sharpe with a straight left to the solar plexus for the second and final knockdown with 41 seconds remaining.
James Kirkland improves to 28-1 (25 KOs) and rebounds from his shocking first round TKO loss to Nobuhiro Ishida in April. Dennis Sharpe suffers his eighth consecutive loss and falls to 17-8-3 (4 KOs). He has not won a bout since 2004.
