A more patient but still explosive Yuriorkis Gamboa (19-0, 16 KOs) delivered a stunning performance tonight in a five-knockdown rout of Jorge Solis (40-3-2, 29 KOs).
Solis was able to take an early lead in the first due to Gamboa’s lack of punching. In the second, the Cuban titlist exploded with right hook for the first knockdown. Gamboa followed up his advantage with a sharp left hook before earning a second knockdown, this one questionable, off a grazing left hook.
Gamboa easily outboxed Solis from outside and mid-range to start the third. He kept this tactic until he saw an opening, and sent Solis falling backwards with a right hook. Solis tried to pick up his offense and started moving forward in a vain attempt to pressure Gamboa. The strategy resulted in another knockdown, this time off a counter left jab Solis didn’t see.
Yuriorkis Gamboa was visibly fired up to end matters in the fourth. His old wildness reappeared; Solis found himself on the canvas off a quick jab-straight right combination. Gamboa pounced on Solis and trapped him against the ropes with a blistering barrage of punches for a fifth and final knockdown.
With rival Juan Manuel Lopez at his side, Gamboa expressed his desire to face JuanMa by the end of 2011.
“Top Rank is going to keep that fight far away because they know he doesn’t have what it takes to beat me,” he stated. “After [he fights] Salido, we’ll get this one done.”
Lopez also contradicted his promoter’s stance of waiting on the fight, stating the fight should be happening soon.
“We can do it, we’ve never said no,” Lopez said of himself and Gamboa. “We’re the best of the division and we have to do it.”
With boxing looking for big name matchups, it’s no surprise HBO would play up a face to face meeting between Top Rank’s undefeated featherweight champions.
On the undercard, Mikey Garcia’s power and pressure were too much for a tough but limited Matt Remillard. Garcia simply walked down Remillard, who didn’t have the firepower to hurt him. After suffering two knockdowns off left hooks, Remillard quietly told his corner “stop the fight” after the 10th.
