Floyd Mayweather’s Epic 2011 Return Will Be Against…Paul Spadafora?!

If this fight goes through the promotion will center on Spadafora's undefeated record, and him getting the better of Floyd in a sparring session 12 years ago. That still won't be enough to save it... Pacquiao has also gotten deserved criticism for fighting Mosley, but Floyd facing Spadafora in 2011 makes Manny's latest foe look like a prime Sugar Ray Leonard.

Yesterday, respected boxing journalist Steve Kim announced on Twitter that he had several reliable sources state that Floyd Mayweather was eyeing a July return for a tuneup bout against Paul Spadafora. The news was so funny and outlandish I couldn’t even bring myself to report it. No way could this be real. No way would Floyd make another comeback, on PPV no doubt, against a well past prime and undersized opponent in Spadafora.

Today the news has been confirmed by Spadafora’s manager, Michael Acri, who stated that he was approached by Don King to set up the summer fight.

It’s no secret that Mayweather is a part-time fighter; he has been ever since knocking out Ricky Hatton in December 2007. People were willing to accept that as long as when he did fight, it was against quality opponents. He got deserved flack for facing lightweight Juan Manuel Marquez in his first comeback, but he was grudgingly given a little leeway from most being that it was his first fight in close to two years. Following it up with the Mosley win put him back in good graces, and that was immediately erased by the debacle of the second Pacquiao negotiations. And here we are again, rinse and repeat. Pacquiao has also gotten deserved criticism for fighting Mosley, but Floyd facing Spadafora in 2011 makes Manny’s latest foe look like a prime Sugar Ray Leonard.

If this fight goes through the promotion will center on Spadafora’s undefeated record, and him getting the better of Floyd in a sparring session 12 years ago. That still won’t be enough to save it. The only thing that somewhat redeems this fight is if Floyd announces a guaranteed, signed deal to face Pacquiao or Sergio Martinez right after.

Based on the below interview from Floyd Sr in December, this Spadafora fight has been in the works for a minute.

SMH @ LMAO at the same time… Proves what everyone has been saying over the years, that Money hand picks and fights nobodies for the most part, and its because of this that Floyd wont, in My books Be considered at GOAT… I have no doubts He could Be, maybe He aint got the hunger, drive and confidence in himself to really put himself on the line and lose that 0
