“You could make me your wife/By what would you wanna?/I got problems/So go on…”
On some level, all of us are reliving our pasts in the present. Our experiences, good and bad, make up the person we are today. What happens when those experiences include sexual abuse, a broken home, violence and abortions? Canadian emcee Eternia details the effects of a damaged psyche with a profound track entitled “To the Future.”
This is the third single off the Eternia & Moss album At Last. The song’s concept is a warning letter to her future husband about the type of wife he is pursuing. Instead of giving him the choice of whether to love her, she decides that’s she unworthy and instructs him to stay far away from her. For men who’ve dealt with damaged women, it’s a reminder of the inherent distrust, limited self-worth and fear they bring into relationships. For the women, it’s an illumination of how these bad experiences can destroy your future.
These are the type of songs we need from female emceess. Women see the world through difference lenses, and it’s unfortunate that many female artists would rather mimic their male counterparts than champion their unique voices.
The At Last album is available now through iTunes.
