EXCLUSIVE: Martinez-Williams III? Martinez Has ‘No Interest’ In Trilogy

"I want that fight. I will take it if the chance presents itself," Williams stated. "I would like to get a chance to redeem myself...I like him personally, we have a good relationship. I still want to get him in the ring one last time."

They’re officially 1-1, but Sergio Martinez has no desire to break the tie by having a trilogy with Paul Williams.

Martinez, who made a successful second defense of his middleweight title last Saturday against Sergiy Dzinziruk, earned Knockout of the Year in 2010 for his one-punch, 2nd round KO of Williams in their December rematch. Williams took a close split decision in their first encounter.

In an interview posted today on boxingscene.com, Williams expressed his desire to settle matters with a rubbermatch.

“I want that fight. I will take it if the chance presents itself,” Williams stated. “I would like to get a chance to redeem myself…I like him personally, we have a good relationship. I still want to get him in the ring one last time.”

Martinez does not share that sentiment. When asked of the potential trilogy, the middleweight champion believes his emphatic knockout dismisses the need for another fight, much like Williams’ revenge KO of Carlos Quintana did in 2008.

“After that last knockout he suffered, I don’t think a third fight would be necessary. I’m definitely not interested,” Martinez confirmed with Beats, Boxing & Mayhem.

At press time, Paul Williams is expected to make his return this summer on HBO.
