LAS VEGAS– We got our last bit of pre-fight hype yesterday (March 9) with the final press conference for Miguel Cotto and Ricardo Mayorga’s PPV fight this Saturday night (March 12) at the MGM Grand. It seems the weeks of dealing with Mayorga’s trash talk has finally got to Cotto; he refused to do the traditional staredown, telling the Nicaraguan slugger to “go take a picture with his mother.” The insult receipt was due to Mayorga earlier in the press conference implying that Cotto had a homosexual relationship with openly gay singer and countryman Ricky Martin.
“After I knock you out, you can go back to Ricky Maritn and finish the job,” he taunted.
Cotto’s never trash-talked and is not about to start now. Like most fighters, he’d rather spend fight week getting mentally ready for the upcoming battle.
“I know it’s part of my job, and something I have to do, but in reality I don’t like it, especially during fight week,” Cotto explained to ESPN. “During fight week we have to be really focused on making weight and I get edgy at times. So I don’t really enjoy it.”
