Rick Ross & Meek Mill Find the Perfectionist’s Flow

The atmosphere is first set by Alchemist, whose production is in the mold of his Blaxploitation-styled work from Prodigy's Return of the Mac. While Pee was serviceable there, these are the type of beats Ross has feasted on for years.

“All my women photogenic/ They never depreciate…”

Many things have been proven untrue about Rick Ross’ life outside the booth. But one thing that cannot be disproven is the man’s talent when it comes to music. It was his saving grace a few years ago when he faced off against 50 Cent, and it remains key in 2011. On this latest offering, “Perfectionist,” Ross continues his vision of smooth “mood music” that we’ve heard on Deeper Than Rap and Teflon Don.

The atmosphere is first set by Alchemist, whose production is in the mold of his Blaxploitation-styled work from Prodigy’s Return of the Mac. While Pee was serviceable there, these are the type of beats Ross has feasted on for years. He and Millz trades quick bars back and forth in the vein of the Lox, and for older heads Smoothe da Hustler’s “Broken Language.” Even though Millz is comfortable in a punchline format, Ross as the superior emcees drops the stronger one-liners (“I’m allergic to failure/ Heroin paraphernalia/ Frank Lucas fur at the fight/ On the cellular…”). They build on each other’s words which gives a freestyle element, and their tight flows keep you very engaged.

Quick flows  are good for an immediate impact, but tend to tamper off the longer the song goes. Therefore, the fact this song wraps up in under three minutes is perfect, no pun intended, for maximum effect. Even if coke, women and materialism are old topics for you, simply sit back and enjoy the instrumentation and flows.
