Pusha T “My God”

Sure, Pusha has held his own on tracks with the like of Jay-Z and Kanye, but the solo album format is a whole different beast. What better way to answer those murmurings then with a quality leak off your upcoming solo project?

“The last supper for you niggas/ Now repaint it…”

Pusha T is G.O.O.D. Music’s wildcard. For anyone who’s listened to a Clipse album, there’s no doubt this Virginia emcee can rhyme. But when you leave the group format, that doesn’t necessarily mean you have the skill to carry a solo project.  Sure, Pusha has held his own on tracks with the likes of Jay-Z and Kanye, but the solo album format is a whole different beast. What better way to answer those murmurings then with a quality leak off your upcoming solo project?

When people think “epic-sounding beats,” that usually translates to the power ballad tracks Alex da Kid is making his name on.  Pusha’s “My God” gives another, most creative variation of the term. Hit Boy Surf Club’s beat thrives on its live instrumentation, which comes from a trippy Bo Hansson track. Nothing is changed, but some melodies are so perfect there’s no need.

There are lots of slick lines here, but Pusha doesn’t go overboard with the punchlines. That’s smart, as it keeps you from categorizing this offering as a glorified mixtape joint. His Clipse roots of coke allusions are there, and declarations of his future greatness. If you’re already a Pusha T fan, you should be very satisfied. Fear of God may turn out to be one of the sleeper mixtapes of 2011.
