Wladmir Klitschko believes David Haye’s career will have no merit if he never fights him or his brother Vitali.
Wladimir and Haye’s proposed July 2 bout is currently in limbo due to Klitschko’s decision to take a April 30 tune-up bout against Dereck Chisora. Haye has claimed that match has forced him to take a mandatory to retain his WBA belt in May against either Ruslan Chagaev or Alexander Povetkin. Haye also claimed that he will do no further negotiations with Wladimir. If Haye keeps his promise to retire by his 31st birthday in October, that lowers the possibility of him unifying the heavyweight titles by facing both Klitschkos, who between them hold the WBO, IBF (Wladimir) and WBC (Vitali) titles.
“He won’t because he talks of leaving a legacy, and what sort of legacy would that be without fighting either me or my brother, Vitali? ” Wladimir Klitschko told the UK’s Independent. “He is bluffing, just as he always has been. I now hear he says he is going to retire and go to Hollywood to be an actor. I don’t believe it. Anyway, he is already treating boxing like Hollywood, the stupid way he conducts himself.”
Wladimir is reportedly close to finalizing talks to face Tomasz Adamek in September, leading some to speculate he was never serious about facing Haye on July 2. But Klitschko says he could have maintained the active fight schedule if Haye would have signed the contract. Previously, Wladimir Klitschko explained that he wanted the Chisora bout to stay busy, and also as an insurance in case the Haye fight again fell through. In addition, Wladimir revealed that he feels Haye is in no position to dictate contract terms.
“We had agreed the contracts, the money, everything but he has still found an excuse. This is because I had committed to fight Dereck Chisora in Mannheim on April 30,” Wladimir continued. “[Haye’s] reaction is inexplicable. He doesn’t want to allow me to fight Chisora before I fight him, but I will not be told what to do by a man who has only fought four heavyweights and whose last fight was a farce against Audley Harrison. I was happy to confirm July 2 but he doesn’t want that.”
At press time, neither David Haye nor Wladimir Klitschko has proposed a rescheduled date.
