Middleweight prospect David Lemieux had no issues last night (December 3) with Purnell Gates, scoring an easy second round TKO. Gates had the right idea trying to give angles, but he apparently forgot that his hands needed to be moving as well as his feet.  A left hook at the 1:09 mark of round two snapped Gates’ head back, and from there his feet became leaden. Another left on a backpedaling Gates was enough for the journeyman to take a quick knee.

The sequence effectively took the fight out of Purnell Gates. He took another knee without being hit. When the ref asked if he wanted to continue, he shook his head, then protested when the ref indicated the fight was over. The ref asked again if he wanted to continue, and Gates appeared to be saying his left hand was injured. Gates’ corner put an end to the debate by throwing in the towel.

The young Canadian next opponent will possibly be Marco Antonio Rubio, who’s known for taking Kelly Pavlik late rounds before suffering a corner stoppage. Rubio is a former Top 10 contender (now Top 20), and good test as the 21-year old Lemieux makes the move from prospect to full-fledged contender by the end of 2011.

Lemieux’s record is now 25-0, with 24 KOs.

  1. Great fight last night, David is almost too pretty to fight. He is a great fighter and we look forward to seeing him again.
