Christy Martin’s husband, James Martin, has been charged with aggravated battery and attempted murder for stabbing and shooting his wife.
James Martin had been in hiding since last Wednesday (November 24). Christy Martin escaped the attack by fleeing their Apopka, Florida home and flagging down a motorist. She remains hospitalized in stable condition.
Several residents reported seeing James Martin in the area, and police found him hiding in a shed just a few blocks from his home.
There was a brief standoff, were Martin threatened suicide and stabbed himself in the stomach. He is being treated at Orlando Regional Medical Center, where his wife is also convalescing. James Martin is under police escort, and will be sent to jail once he’s medically cleared.
In a prepared statement, a representative for Christy Martin thanked her fans for their thoughts and prayers.
“Female boxing legend Christy Martin would like to thank her friends and fans for their support, love and encouraging thoughts and wishes during this difficult time,” the statement read. “Christy is making a full recovery and hopes to be released from the hospital in the very near future. Please continue to keep her and her family in your prayers.”
66-year-old James Martin served as his wife’s trainer and manager. At press time, the reason for the attack is still unknown.
