A Tribe Called Quest are getting a long overdue film treatment with a new documentary from actor Michael Rappaport. For the young heads, A Tribe Called Quest is one of the most influential groups in Hip-Hop history courtesy of their excellent run of albums, including two undisputed classics in Low End Theory and Midnight Marauders.
This isn’t a hagiography from Rapaport. Rather, it’s detailed account of all the internal strife that caused the group’s dissolution, and what brought them back together. And joining in the discussion are ?uestlove, Monie Love, Nas, Mos Def, and Large Professor.
My first memories of Tribe come courtesy of my mother, who picked up the vinyl single for “Bonita Applebum.” I was around eight years old. She was also into De La Soul, so it was definitely a Native Tongues household.
There doesn’t appear to be a set release date, but the word is this will have a spot at the Sundance Film Festival in 2011.
