“And now they want to bring the 90s back/It’s ok, because that’s where they designed me at…”
The one producer-one emcee tandem has been making a huge comeback in Hip-Hop music. The result? We’re getting projects that are way more cohesive musically, and better showcase the lyrical and thematic range of the emcee. The latest example of that is Skyzoo and !llmind’s Live From the Tape Deck, which dropped yesterday. Skyzoo was adamant about telling everyone that he wasn’t trying to make your typical, mid 90s nostalgic boom-bap record. And while this new single, “Speakers On Blast,” isn’t a tired retread, the throwback chorus (the opening lines of Black Sheep’s “The Choice Is Yours”) let’s you know where the essence of this project lies. Check out the video below and in rotation on MTVu.

1982 COMES BACK THIS OCTOBER
“But I’m trying to be a star/So I guess I got to rap subpar/’Cause they ain’t feeling you when your bars are like Ra/Kim Jadakiss, M.O.P. and Nas/They rather have you rap about the girls and the cars…”
Not to be outdone, Statik Selektah and Termanology have their own LP dropping on October 26 entitled 1982. Selektah crafts what can be a called a “subdued banger.” Think a better version of Kanye’s work on Game’s “Angel.” Termanology ponders when he shot at stardom will come while images flash of him juggling various odd jobs from retail to mechanic work. It’s a theme that should hit home for many who are struggling to make their dreams financially viable.
