[Interview] FROM S3 Finale Review w/ Harold Perrineau! S4 Hints on “King in Yellow” and All-Out Town Warfare

The season three finale of From took an ominous turn with Harold Perrineau’s Boyd Stevens using torture in hopes of saving his daughter-in-law’s life.

The move represents a dramatic turn for a character seen as the show’s hero and possibly marks the culmination of the Night Creatures’s promise to “break him.”

In an exclusive interview with BeatsBoxingMayhem.com, Perrineau argued Boyd is still holding onto his humanity despite unspeakable acts against Elgin, a townsperson he’s sworn to protect.

“I’m going to say he’s not broken,” Perrineau told BeatsBoxingMayhem. “The thing about Boyd is even though the choices are questionable, he’s really trying to do the best for the most people he can. He’s trying to understand the situations the best way he can without giving up his soul. He has a really great protector in Sara. I don’t think he’s broken just yet, but man he’s getting close.”

The fallout from Elgin’s torture from Boyd and Sara remains unresolved going into season four. Will the townspeople revolt against Boyd’s leadership upon discovering his lies about Fatima’s involvement in Tillie’s death? Will Acosta fan the flames in hopes of snatching power for herself? Can Colony House still function after Donna after she allowed Elgin’s torture under her roof?

Perrineau speculates their season three finale choices will ideologically change every relationship and make separation the only viable solution.

“This looks like the split in the road,” Perrineau said. “I have a feeling there will be a new camp set up somewhere else. Otherwise, we’ll be at war.”

On the supernatural front, the mysterious “Kimono Woman’s” malevolent intentions were revealed when she used Fatima’s womb to resurrect the Night Creature Smiley. But another dangerous entity emerged in the “Man in Yellow,” who brutally slew Jim in front of his daughter Julie to conclude the episode. The Man in Yellow’s appearance draws immediate comparisons to the shadowy title character of the classic horror collection The King in Yellow, which later inspired part of HP Lovecrafte’s Chutulu mythos.

The King in Yellow mythology received a modern resurgence courtesy of heavy allusions to it in the first season of True Detective. The Man in Yellow warning Jim of forbidden knowledge leads to speculation that From’s season four could give its own spin on the legend.

“I would imagine that too but I didn’t know anything about the lore of the King in Yellow,” said Perrineau. “That’s actually very cool. Now I’m about to go back and look at some of that stuff and see if I can come up with any ideas that really might work.”
