House of the Dragon S2.E5 Review: Jace’s Wild Dragon Plan, Smallfolk to Overthrow Greens and Blacks?!

Has Jacaerys Velaryon unlocked the crucial key to victory against the Greens, or ushered a move that ignites a smallfolk revolution? The fallout from the costly Rook’s Rest battle is the focus for both the Greens and Blacks in House of the Dragon’s episode 205 “Regent.”

With Rhaenys and her formidable dragon Meleys dead, Rhaenyra’s battles to gain respect from her own council. Her son Jacaerys proposes an ambitious move to recruit Targaryean descendants to tame two wild dragons and become equalizers to Aemond’s fearsome beast Vhagar.

The two obvious candidates are the blacksmith Hugh and soldier Ulf, both sporting silver hair with the former being featured heavily this episode behind his attempts to leave King’s Landing. But can these two, or any other potential dragon rider recruits, be trusted to remain loyal to Rhaenyra’s cause when they’ll have dragons at their disposal?

And if the eventual dragonriders have more ties to the smallfolk, as both Hugh and Ulf have, should Rhaenyra risk empowering these new riders to become champions to the smallfolk and rivals to the crown?

In our latest House of the Dragon season two review, I discuss the pros and cons of Jace’s plan, Rhaenyra’s latest schemes with Mysaria, why Daemon’s Harrenhal storyline is a mess, and more.
