The most memorable Night Creature is dead. Or is he? In last Sunday’s premiere of FROM‘s episode 206 “Pas de Deux,” the creature known as Smiley was felled by Boyd’s (Harold Perrineau) infected blood and giving the it’s most significant revelation since being trapped.
Jamie McGuire, who plays the grinning predator, has enjoyed the fan response to his method for making the the character distinct amongst his fellow creatures.
“Back in season 1 when we were filming there was a bunch of creatures, myself included,” said McGuire. “The direction we were given was walk slow and be creepy. So I’m thinking to myself, how can I be creepy?
“Whenever I would watch certain TV shows and movies, I always found some of the greatest antagonist or villains would always have this charming yet mischievous or wicked grin. That always made them intimidating as they were charming.
“Sure enough, I turned on the grin and hey, it worked for me.”
Smiley was behind the standout season 2 kill of an elderly couple who unwittingly sought shelter on their arriving bus instead of heeding Donna’s (Elizabeth Saunders) warnings.
To go from feared, invincible predator to a screeching, agonizing death at Boyd’s hands was an indescribable feeling for McGuire. However, he cautions viewers from holding a definitive view on any character’s fates.
“Acting it out was exciting and incredible,” McGuire reflected. “As a fan and a viewer, it was equally exciting to see the show going in that direction. I can’t really describe it — it’s been an adventure… that’s assuming they were successful with that [killing]. We don’t know what’s going to happen.”
FROM season 2 airs through every Sunday at 9 p.m. ET through June 25.
