The first teaser trailer is here for what will undoubtedly be one of the year’s most controversial films. Birth of a Nation chronicles the life of 19th century preacher turned slave revolt leader Nat Turner.
Turner’s owner, Samuel Turner (Armie Hammer), initially uses him to preach a form of Christianity that keeps the slaves subjugated. But as Turner travels and see the full atrocity of slavery, he has a religious vision that leads him to a new message of liberation and retribution.
Birth of Nation debuted to a standing ovation at the Sundance Film Festival and set a new record when Fox Searchlight purchased the worldwide distribution rights for $17.5 million.
The film hits theaters on October 7.
