With producer Knowledge on the boards, Joey Badass adds his name to the list of emcees that have responded to Kendrick Lamar’s “Control.” This is a solid song on its own, but linking it with the “Control” verse brings forth extra scrutiny. The main point that’s lyrically driven home is that Joey feels he’s the successor of Nas, Big L, Guru, Biggie and others, making Kendrick’s “King of NY” line highly disrespectful (“The King of New York, ha!/We ain’t just gonna let that one hang…”). We learned from Badass’ beef with Lil B that diss records aren’t his strength, so if you take the Kendrick lines for the isolated bars they are, your opinion of this song will be much higher.
