It’s About Time… Canelo Alvarez Confirms Austin Trout for May 4

No more excuses about someone not being a "draw" or the fight not being "fan-friendly." Canelo Alvarez, WBC junior middleweight champion, did the right thing tonight confirming that he'll face WBA titlist Austin Trout in a unification match on May 4 in Las Vegas.

No more excuses about someone not being a “draw” or the fight not being “fan-friendly.” Canelo Alvarez, WBC junior middleweight champion, did the right thing tonight confirming that he’ll face WBA titlist Austin Trout in a unification match on May 4 in Las Vegas.

Alvarez has been rumored to have wanted the fight since Trout upset Miguel Cotto in early December, much to the chagrin of promoter Golden Boy who wasn’t sold on Trout’s pay-per-view marketability.

“I am very happy,” Alvarez told BoxingScene.com. “I didn’t want (Trout) to say anything, because (Golden Boy) told us that we shouldn’t say anything. But now I’ve been told that I can say something, and since then it’s been confirmed that we are going with Trout for May 4.”

Trout, who started lobbying for the Canelo fight during his in-ring interview after defeating Cotto, had a simple message for fans on social media.

“Are you ready? #TroutCanelo,” he tweeted.

An announcement on Floyd Mayweather’s opponent, which will likely be the main event, is expected by next week.

Thankfully smarter heads prevailed in this one. The only logical opponent for Canelo to face was Trout after he trounced Cotto. For all his talent, Alvarez has had an easy schedule over the past year. It isn’t all his fault with fights against Paul Williams and James Kirkland falling through, but after feasting on a junior welterweight last September in Josesito Lopez, it’s high time Canelo took on a dangerous opponent.

So now that it’s signed, who is you early pick?
