What are the perks of being a rap star? None really, if you ask Homeboy Sandman, whose “aw shucks” attitude brings a low-key, almost adolescent-like innocence to the video for “Not Really.” Instead of the extremes of an emcee detailing the pitfalls or indulging in the wretched excesses of the rap industry, Sandman takes the route of a man who’s remained grounded and content with a normal life pursuing his passion. Production-wise and with the conversational flow, this feels like something A Tribe Called Quest would’ve dropped circa their first two albums. “Not Really” can be found on Homeboy Sandman’s latest album First of a Dying Breed.
