Berto Bicep Rupture Cancels Ortiz Rematch

"He had to go the hospital to get it checked out and he is hurt," a source told ESPN. "I know the fight is in jeopardy of not happening on that date. It didn't sound good."

A ruptured left bicep injury to Andre Berto has resulted in the cancellation of his February 11 rematch against Victor Ortiz.

Berto suffered the injury while training today in Van Nuys, California. The rupture diagnosis was disseminated amongst media late Monday evening.

“He had to go the hospital to get it checked out and he is hurt,” a source told ESPN. “I know the fight is in jeopardy of not happening on that date. It didn’t sound good.”

Their April 2011 bout was a high Fight of the Year contender that featured each fighter getting knocked down twice. The exciting battle resulted in the winner, Victor Ortiz, facing Floyd Mayweather last September. Berto would recover from his defeat by winning the IBF welterweight title that same month against Jan Zaveck. He has since vacated that title to avenge his only defeat over a mandatory defense.

TV promotion for the anticipated rematch was set to begin Wednesday (February 1) with an episode of Showtime’s Fight Camp 360.

At press time, Andre Berto is rumored to be undergoing surgery tonight.
