Hopkins Praises CA Commission Reversal of Dawson TKO: “Justice was served today…”

"Justice was served today," Hopkins stated. "I am thrilled that the California State Athletic Commission did the right thing and removed that loss from my record. Mistakes happen, but what you do to fix those mistakes is what counts."

Bernard Hopkins reclaimed his WBC light-heavyweight title today after the California State Athletic Commission changed his second round TKO loss at the hands of Chad Dawson to a no decision.

The verdict was made during a CSAC hearing. In the October 15 bout, Chad Dawson used his shoulder to shake off a Bernard Hopkins clinch. The champion fell awkwardly and suffered a dislocated shoulder. Referee Pat Russell ruled the fight a second round TKO win for Dawson after it was deemed Hopkins could not continue.

Hopkins lauded the CSAC for recognizing what he called a clear referee mistake.

“Justice was served today,” Hopkins stated. “I am thrilled that the California State Athletic Commission did the right thing and removed that loss from my record. Mistakes happen, but what you do to fix those mistakes is what counts.”

“The footage of the fight that was reviewed over and over again, proved to be the key testimony. I think it came down to the tape. Both of our sides were making good points, but it was a dinner without a turkey. The tape was the turkey. I am happy this ordeal is over. Now I can focus on continuing to rehab my shoulder and get ready to fight again, hopefully early next year. I will start my usual boxing routine in a couple of weeks and get ready to defend my titles again.”

At press time, Chad Dawson could not be reached for comment. Bernard Hopkins, who now sports a revised record of 52-5-2 (32 KOs), has not announced a list of potential opponents for 2012.
