“Can he keep it up?” That was the question a reader posed on this website about T.I.’s string of show-stealing guest spots since coming home from year bid for parole violation. Vowing to bring back his Trap Muzik form, T.I. has sounded rejuvenated and focused on all his freestyles and leaks. And with naming his next LP Trouble Man after a classic Marvin Gaye album, T.I. has created a high anticipation for a big comeback.
Then came “Pyro.”
The song is not completely without merit; Two Band Geeks’ production, while basic, is robust and catchy. Nonetheless, “Pyro” is a clear step back from all of T.I.’s recent post-prison work. At times, Tip’s rhyme schemes feel derivative of something you’d expect from Lil Wayne down to the supa dupa/ pause stop flow. Thankfully, singles for major label albums often aren’t a reflection of a project’s sound. Let’s hope this also applies to Trouble Man.
