Heavy D (Dwight Arrington Myers), a pioneer emcee of the late 80s and early 90s, died suddenly earlier today after being rushed to a Los Angeles hospital. He was 44 years old.

Last week, the Mount Vernon, NY emcee had seen a physician for a bad cough and pneumonia-like symptoms. A 911 call was placed after breathing problems caused Heavy D to collapse in the walkway of his Los Angeles home.

“Upon arrival, officers discovered a male, 44 years old, conscious, communicative, but having difficulty breathing,” read a statement from the Beverly Hills Police Department.

Heavy D was still conscious at the hospital at noon, but was pronounced dead by 1 PM.

Heavy D released nine albums in a career spanning 25 years. Under his “Overweight Lover” moniker, Heavy D attracted a devoted female following through sophisticated Hip-Hop love songs such as “Nuttin’ But Love,” “Now That We Found Love,” and “Is It Good To You.” His use of stylish suits would be a direct influence on the image of later emcees such as the Notorious B.I.G.

Last month, Heavy D made his first public performance in 15 years as a surprise artist at the BET Hip Hop Awards.

At press time, a cause of death has not been determined. Beats, Boxing & Mayhem will follow this story as it develops.
