Footage of James Kirkland’s recent sparring preparation for Alfredo Angulo leaked onto the internet yesterday. The ring is abnormally small so Kirkland has no problem walking down his much larger opponent. Has his defense improved? Not really — Kirkland can still be seen walking into right crosses due to his minimal head movement and wild haymakers. Nonetheless, the unnamed sparring partner doesn’t have the power to keep Kirkland off him and takes a pasting in the last few minutes. He withers under the assault and takes verbal criticism from Kirkland and his trainer Ann Wolfe (“He’s a pussy…”). This doesn’t convince me that Kirkland can beat Angulo, but it is further proof that we have a barbaric, can’t miss slugfest coming Saturday (November 5) on HBO.
